Stalked crinoids (Echinodermata) collected by the R/V Polarstern and Meteor in the south Atlantic and in Antarctica
During the last decades, R/V Meteor and R/V Polarstern deep-sea investigations in the south Atlantic and neighbouring Southern Ocean collected new samples of stalked crinoids belonging to the families Bathycrinidae, Phrynocrinidae and Hyocrinidae which are herein described. The species found are Bathycrinus australis A.H. Clark, 1907b (the most abundant), Dumetocrinus aff. antarcticus (Bather, ...
متن کاملEvolutionary history of regeneration in crinoids (Echinodermata).
The fossil record indicates that crinoids have exhibited remarkable regenerative abilities since their origin in the Ordovician, abilities that they likely inherited from stem-group echinoderms. Regeneration in extant and fossil crinoids is recognized by abrupt differences in the size of abutting plates, aberrant branching patterns, and discontinuities in carbon isotopes. While recovery is comm...
متن کاملPCB exposure and regeneration in crinoids (Echinodermata)
Echinoderm regeneration provides a convenient and tractable test to monitor the effects of persistent micropollutants on the developmental physiology of marine animals. Regeneration involves crucial and sensitive biological processes (cell proliferation, morphogenesis, differentiation, tissue renewal) that make it an ideal tool to assess micropollutants at the tissue and cellular level. Our res...
متن کاملPleomorphy in stalked, budding bacteria.
An investigation of hyphomicrobia from manganese deposits and various fresh-water habitats revealed an astonishing degree of pleomorphy in the group. A range of variation spanning two described genera (Hyphomicrobium and Pedomicrobium) was induced by varying culture conditions and was further observed in natural environments. It is suggested that Pedomicrobium is an invalid genus.
متن کاملXO . l 820 RECENT CRINOIDS FROM PHILIPPINES —
The first consignment of crinoids received from the United States Fisheries steamer Albatross, now engaged in work among the Philippine Islands, proves to be a collection of more than usual interest. Not only does it contain a remarkably large number of new and interesting forms, but many species, heretofore known only from single more or less imperfect specimens, are represented. The littoral ...
